Abstract

This article explores the discourses on the current situation of social security in Ecuador, which the Constitution establishes as a right and a primary duty of the State. The methodology used is based on the information of the State debt and the analysis of the existing narratives, especially the voices in favor of the AFPs, individual savings and the discourse of social security’s bankruptcy. Emphasis is placed on the different myths about the situation of the IESS and the need to understand the real problems and needs of social security in Ecuador, as well as on the political economy of IESS investments.
