Abstract

The National Symphony Orchestra of Ecuador, since 1956, has promoted national compositions integrating a variety of aesthetic trends in its programming by performing a variety of Ecuadorian pieces in concerts. The purpose of this study is to catalog and place the contemporary repertoire of Ecuadorian composers performed by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ecuador during the second half of the 20th century. In order to achieve this, this work aims to list the current pieces that are performed as well as explain the programming´s principles for every performance. Through the technical criteria for musical cataloging of RISM (Repertoire International des Sources Musicales), it is proposed a record of performed contemporary works by analyzing programs and press articles. Subsequently, this paper inquires on the contexts, discourses and the motivation related to its selection and performance. Finally, this research highlights the crucial role of Gerardo Guevara and Álvaro Manzano in programming the repertoire of contemporary music by Ecuadorian composers at the OSNE.
