Abstract

The following article explores the use of irony as a stylistic resource in Ecuadorian’s protest music. Specifically, the song “Patria, mala palabra” by Jaime Guevara, a singer-song writer from Quito. This article explores the social and political context of Ecuador at the time in which this song emerged in relation to the climate debate over oil exploitation in the Yasuní ITT national park. In addition, an analysis of the music video of the song is presented in relation to its music and text to finally comment on the impact it has had on the community defending environmental rights in Ecuador
