Abstract

The division into successive chronological periods most frequently used today, with various variations of different magnitude according to different authors, is the one proposed by the American archaeologist Betty Meggers nearly half a century ago (1966). Subsequent developments in the knowledge of the archeology of Ecuador have produced some significant changes in this field, both with regard to the subsequent recognition of some important cultures (Las Vegas, Cotocollao, among others), as well as significant precisions, except in regarding the Formative of the Sierra and the Amazon in general, but regarding their dating. Unfortunately, no consensus has yet been reached to integrate the advances of the last half century into a generally accepted sequence.
